Decolonizing American Christianity: A Journey Toward Spiritual and Mental Wholeness

Updated: May 8, 2025

As we approach Christian Heritage Month this June, I invite you to join me on a reflective journey through my new blog series titled "Decolonizing American Christianity." This series aims to explore the intersections of faith, culture, and mental wellness, offering insights into how our spiritual beliefs have been shaped and how we can reclaim a more authentic connection to the Divine.

Why This Series?

We are living in a time of profound tension politically, socially, and spiritually. Across America, many are feeling and seeing a deep disconnection: from each other, from purpose, and from the Divine. The rise in anxiety, spiritual fatigue, and division isn’t just about external conflict it reflects something much deeper within our collective story.

Much of this unrest is rooted in a legacy we haven't fully confronted. For centuries, Christianity in America has often been filtered through the lens of colonization, stripping many communities of the cultural and spiritual richness that once grounded them. Faith became tethered to power structures, often silencing the voices of the very people it was meant to liberate.

This blog series, Decolonizing American Christianity, is a response to that spiritual dislocation. It’s an invitation to pause, reflect, and reconsider what it means to be spiritually whole.

Through this series, we’ll explore how reconnecting with our ancestral heritage can restore our spiritual balance. Understanding the spiritual traditions that existed long before Western religious systems were imposed allows us to see God more fully beyond borders, beyond dogma. When we reconnect with where we come from, we find new ways to honor where we’re going.

This journey is both personal and collective. My own exploration began after a life-changing trip to Africa just before the pandemic and deepened through my studies in psychology and behavioral health. Genetic testing, done for medical reasons, unveiled truths about my ancestry that spoke louder than any textbook. These revelations pushed me to ask bigger questions about who I am, where I come from, and how those truths connect to how I see God.

But this is not just my story it’s our shared reality. In this cultural moment, when everything feels uncertain, reclaiming our spiritual heritage may be one of the most radical forms of healing we can offer ourselves and each other.

What to Expect

In this series, we will:

  • Explore Pre-Christian Spiritual Practices: Delve into the rich spiritual traditions that existed across various cultures before the advent of Christianity, highlighting the universal quest for connection with the Divine.

  • Examine the Impact of Colonization on Faith: Understand how colonial powers used Christianity as a tool for control, leading to the suppression of indigenous spiritual practices and the imposition of foreign religious structures.

  • Discuss the Intersection of Spiritual and Mental Health: Analyze how spiritual disconnection and historical trauma contribute to mental health issues, and how reclaiming cultural spiritual practices can promote healing.

  • Celebrate Cultural Diversity in Faith: Appreciate the diverse expressions of faith that honor both cultural heritage and spiritual beliefs, moving beyond appropriation to genuine appreciation.

  • Share Personal Reflections: I will share parts of my own journey, including the challenges and revelations encountered while reconnecting with ancestral spiritual practices.

Why It Matters

Decolonizing American Christianity is not about rejecting faith; it's about peeling back layers of historical and cultural imposition to rediscover a more authentic, inclusive, and healing spiritual path. It's about recognizing that spiritual health is intrinsically linked to mental wellness, and that reclaiming our cultural spiritual identities can be a powerful step toward holistic healing.

This series is not intended to provoke controversy but to invite thoughtful reflection and dialogue. It's an opportunity to explore how embracing the fullness of our cultural and spiritual identities can lead to greater personal and communal well-being.

I look forward to embarking on this journey with you.
